No. 1 Canyon del Oro fell to No. 8 Tucson 10-9 at Cherry Field in Tucson. Wendy Castro gave the Dorados a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and Jenna Martinez knocked in Brenna Griesser in the second but the 2-0 lead would not hold up on a night when the lead changed eight times.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: SAHUARO BEAT TUCSON 3-0 IN TUNE-UP FOR STATE

Sahuaro is a lock to make the Division II state tournament but the Cougars would like to go in as a higher seed and maybe even host a match or two. Ranked No. 7 heading into their match against No. 18 Tucson on Friday, the Cougars knew a loss would make that almost impossible.

Salpointe went undefeated to capture the championship of the TUSD Boy's Volleyball Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Pueblo High School. The Lancers finished 6-0 at the invite, defeating Tucson 2-1 (26-27, 25-20, 15-13) in the final.

SOCCER: Salpointe girls clinch playoffs, Tucson boys get closer

The state soccer playoffs are drawing near and some of the teams punched their ticket to the show Friday night while others are still battling for a spot. The No.4 Salpointe girls won the Division II, Section VI title thanks to a 3-2 overtime win at No. 6 Tucson and the No. 3 Tucson boys drew a bit closer to a title thanks to their 3-1 overtime win at No. 16 Salpointe.

VOLLEYBALL: Sahuaro defeats Tucson 3-1

Tucson Sahuaro remained perfect after the Cougars defeated Tucson 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-12) on Thursday night. The win solidified the Cougars as one of the teams to beat in Southern Arizona after the squad improved to 5-0 in division play and 11-0 overall including a six-game sweep at the TUSD Invitational two weekends ago.

FOOTBALL: Ironwood Ridge stuns Salpointe 33-7

Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge took a gamble opening up the season against Division I power Chandler Hamilton. The Nighthawks may have lost that game 44-7 but they gained so much more. The Nighthawks learned how to adjust and grow together as a team and their learning curve was on display Friday night thanks to a 33-7 win over Tucson Salpointe.

Finally, Oro Valley Canyon del Oro (31-6) and Tucson Sahuaro (25-9) had another epic playoff battle with the Dorados coming out on top 12-11 in eight innings. The game lasted over three hours and over 30 players were used.

Canyon del Oro (32-2) outlasted Tucson Salpointe 16-15 in the winner's bracket of the Division II state playoffs to set up an improbable rematch 13 years later in the semifinal round with Tucson (27-5) after the Badgers got past Tucson Sunnyside 4-2 in the nightcap.

Billed as a high-powered double header at Amphitheater High School, the third round of the Division II playoffs turned into a night of missed opportunities and errors. Plenty of errors. No. 4 Vail Cienega run-ruled No. 12 Tucson High 14-0 in the first game on Thursday night and No. 2 Salpointe defeated No. 7 Canyon del Oro 12-4 in the nightcap.

Bishop Gorman to play Tucson for Chris Moon Memorial championship

Chris Moon was the consensus 2007 Southern Arizona baseball player of the year. The Tucson High pitcher/outfielder got the attention of the Atlanta Braves and was drafted in the 35th round. Moon chose to play for the University of Arizona instead and signed up with Andy Lopez that fall. It was that class of commitments that eventually won the NCAA championship for the Wildcats in 2012 but Moon would not be one of them.
