DI boys golf: Highland soph Brock Goyen takes medalist honors

Brock Goyen apparently didn't want to play catch up in this year's Division I boys state golf tournament. And he didn't want to relinquish the lead no matter how hard others tried.

The Highland sophomore never trailed the entire 36 holes and wrapped up medalist honors Thursday afernoon with a 2-shot victory at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen. Goyen tied for 14th last year at state as a freshman. He made the tournament at-large this year as his team did not qualify.

Goyen birdied the first four holes in Wednesday's first round, finished at -5 for the  day and held to his lead by shooting a 69 in the finale. His final total was 8-under 136. Goyen clinched medalist honors holing out his second shot on the par 4 eighth hole for an eagle. That dented the hopes of Hamilton's Jino Sohn, the final Goyen challenger of the day. Sohn had pulled within one shot of Goyen with two to play. Sohn shot the best round of the day -- a 6-under 66. Thanks to Goyen's late eagle it wasn't enough. Sohn totaled 138, 6-under par.

The team title was hotly contested between Hamilton and Desert Mountain for about nine holes on Thursday. Those teams were within a couple strokes of each other until then, but it was Hamilton (598) that carved out its sixth team crown in the sport by nine shots over Desert Mountain (607). It was Hamilton's first team title since 2009. Rounding out the top five teams are Brophy (613), Mountain Ridge (619) and Mountain View (622).

Hamilton led by two shots over Desert Mountain, three over Brophy and eight over Mountain Ridge heading to the final round. Hamilton shot 2-under 286 in the final round, seven shots better than Desert Mountain and buoyed by Sohn's 66 -- the tournament's best round.

Sohn, Mountain Ridge's Noel Sims, Sandra Day O'Connor's Eric Ghim and Mesa Mountain View's Cooper Wayment all took their shots at catching Goyen during the round. Sohn was five shots back of Goyen heading to the final round. Wayment  shot a 5-under 67, the second best round of the day. Wayment was eight shots back of Goyen at the start of the second round. Ghim was within three shots of Goyen and Sims within five when the final round started. Both didn't make the run Sohn did late, but managed to stay close the first ine. Still both finished in the top five. Sims was third at 4-under 140, Ghim and Wayment 2-under 142 to tie for fourth.

Finishing sixth through 10th individually: Desert Mountain's David Ricciardi (144), Brophy's Michael Feagles (144), Hamilton's Tommi Avant (145), Buena's Briggs Duce (145), Cienega's Colton Gage (146) and Hamilton's Jake McDevitt (146).
