Mesquite softball coach Jeff Shufelt has seen his team surrender bushel baskets of runs lately (39 in its last three defeats) and battle the loss of a couple key players (Ayssa Vargas and Katie Greco) to injury. The Wildcats, however, were definitely battlers Monday afternoon, coming back from two-run deficits early and late to subdue Perry High, 7-6, in a 5A non-region game at Mesquite.

Mountain Pointe is on pace to break the school record its baseball team set last season for home runs (60). That mark likely will be broken with the Pride resting at 48 homers in 18 games to date. But coach Brandon Buck does not believe home runs define the hitting success the Pride possess. He thinks a game a couple days ago against Marcos de Niza is more telling.

A day after its 14-game home run streak came to an end, Mountain Pointe started another one. After getting shut out for the first three innings on Wedneday afternoon by rival Desert Vista, Mountain Pointe erupted for 16 runs over the final four innings and posted a come-from-behind 16-8 win in a 5A non-region baseball game at Desert Vista.

There will be plenty of returning champs and many more aiming to become champs Friday and Saturday at the 71st Annual Chandler Rotary Track and Field Meet at Chandler HS Austin Field. Twelve defending champs covering 14 events return to the Rotary, according to meet director Dave Shapiro. A total of 107 schools will be represented.
